Broken screen Handspring

I know there have been posts on this in the past, but I did a search and
couldn't find anything.

If a screen is broken, must it be fixed by the manufacturer, ot could i bur
the screen and replac it myself.  Any place to find a how-to.
Or any suggestions on what to do.  I really don't want to send my PDA back.
