These links are probably counter to what you were asking, but sometimes
knowing other alternatives can give insight as to where you are going.
How about using your Palm in conjunction with a Smart Card? At Comdex I saw
the SmartClip from sunderland Technologies (www.sunland-group.com). This is
a Smart Card Reader and Writer for the Palm III/V. FWIW I tried it out on my
Palm VII while I was there and it worked straight away. The unit is along
the lines of a sled, with the card going into the top of the unit, behind
the Palm. The developers kit came in at around $2000 which is a little
pricey to play with until I have a definate application in mind. No idea of
how much the individual readers would be (I imagine they would be on the
pricey side).
If it is authentication security yo are after, you might be more interested
in something like SecureId token authentication devices (see
www.rsasecurity.com/products/securid/techspecs/palm.html for the Palm
version). I am not familiar with the new product names (previously
used/installed the "Security Dynamics ACEServer" product range before it was
bought by RSA). Basically, these are one shot password generators that work
in conjunction with NT and UNIX security systems. The link I supplied is for
the Palm softtoken version, but they also have credit card size and "key
fob" versions.
