I know this may sound stupid (hey, I have not even wrote my own first
program yet; I am still trying to get somewhere in the book ;), but
couldn't you ask the Palm to identify itself (Palm III, V, MCMLXVII? Isn't
a way to do so? If that is the case, you can then figure out the screen
dpi for each device *before* and then go from there (I bet they are written
somewhere). Another suggestion: can't you just *ask* the user which Palm
he/she/it is using?
