They are just vertical versions of the "cursor right" and "cursor 
left" strokes, if you know those. It's not like a "V", it's a 
vertical stroke that goes up, then back down over the same line (or 
vice versa).

Now that I've gotten used to it, I have to say it's wonderfully 
convenient, from a user point of view. I also have to say I'm 
appalled at how few apps implement this lovely UI shortcut...
