I vaguely recall a bug in the old (first?) Mac desktop software that caused
app info blocks to end up being 512 bytes. I don't remember the details. You
may be able to find out about this bug in the archives, but I'm not sure
whether they go that far back.

I'd tell your Mac customer to upgrade his/her desktop software. Anything
from the last couple of years should be fine. :)
