There is only one category list that CategorySelect uses. It's stored
in the Appinfo block of a database and that's where it expects to
find the category structure.

They must have written their own code to do it. You could always use
the 3.1 or 3.5 source code as a starting point to write your own
solution. It would probably have 80% off what you need.
