The easy solution would be to give the new version the same database name
as the old one. The launcher name can be different of course.

But if you really have to change the name, I woulkd suggest the following
(which I haven't tried):

Keep the creator id but increase the version attribute in the database
header. I would hope then, that the new version will be accessible by the
launcher instead of the old one. The new program could then delete the old
version like with your own idea.
