Hi Chris,

I'll see what I can find out about local distribution/support for NZ and
take that off-line.

Regarding the DB9 pinout, just a couple of points of interest...

I'd imagine that the pinout of your modified cradle would be essentially the
same as on the normal Handspring Hotsync cradle to communicate between the
Visor (DCE) and desktop/laptop (DTE). Worst case, you may have to try a
couple of tests or use a breakout box.

If the pinout is the same, pins 2 and 3 on the DB9 male on the desktop are
RX and TX. Visor handhelds use only TX/RX/GND for serial communications.
There are no active RTS/CTS signaling on the handheld side. Voltage levels
are TTL (3.3V in the case of Visor Deluxe) at the cradle connector.
Sometimes developers will use the serial cradle, with it's level shifting
circuitry, for prototyping purposes to communicate with RS232 level devices.
The level shifting circuitry is powered from the desktop/laptop side on DTR
and RTS. The handheld pinout is configured as a DCE, so you'll need a null
modem to connect to another DCE (that may have been a modification that was
done in your modified cradle).

Finally, there are some companies that produce cables with the level
shifting built-in. They are from ATL
(http://www.atlconnect.com/thirdparty/handspring/hs_frameset.htm) and
Mark/Space (http://www.markspace.com/datacord.html).

Hope that helps.

Subject: Looking for an NZ Handspring distributor

Hi,

My apologies for interrupting the discussion with this message,
but I'm running out of ideas.

I am located in New Zealand and have been given a
Handspring Visor and custom device to write some software
for but have *not* been given a hotsync cable (well, the
(engineer) client has rewired the hotsync base unit to a 9-pin
D-plug without giving me pin-out details to create a connector
cable).

Anyway, I can't locate a Handspring distributor or support agent
in New Zealand and I'm short on time. Can anyone help?

Chris Tutty
