But it would also be safer and a negligible size difference if you guys just
leave the existing useful and semi-documented system resources in future OS
versions.  :-)

That _is_ a benefit.  Artwork did change when color became available.
Pre-color apps that use system images get free color on color devices, while
apps with local copies stay black and white.  I think I wrote one pre-color
app that used system alert bitmaps like this and would benefit from it.
