ListPtr->itemsText (and POSE)

Ok, so what is the super-secret API that lets me get at
ListPtr->itemsText without generating the "memory owned by UI" warning
message under POSE?  

I'm posting this here as I believe it's an API question that isn't
really related to POSE, except that POSE alerted me to an "illegal" call
I've been using.
