That's really just a vestige left by very early Palm OS (well, Pilot)
development, from when there wasn't necessarily a screen to look at. Also
used by the Mac-based simulator.
Occasionally still useful, but not very often. You can expect that it'd go
away when we get around to it, or only be enabled in a simulation
environment.
