Hi,

My company makes a data acquisition device that is designed
to connect to a Palm through the serial port. We load the data from
our acquisition device into the Palm, and the Palm basically serves
as a data logger. The system works well, and we're happy with it -
but we have a minor problem.

We have been using Palm III's (most recently the IIIIxe), and
those are getting hard to find. I understand that soon they will be
impossible to find. We are doing a redesign of the data acquisition
box, and now is the time to select a new model of Palm to use for the
next revision of the hardware.

We need to select one model of Palm that we can use for about
the next three years. We don't need anything fancy - just a basic
Palm with 2 MB of RAM is sufficient. We probably have to select one
model and stick with it, because we design our box with some molded
plastic features that allow the Palm to clip onto (i.e. attach to)
our box. The tooling is fairly expensive, and the molded plastic
features are pretty specific to one size/shape of Palm.

Also, I understand that beginning now, all models of Palm
will come with a standard connector (thank you, Palm!) and the port
will be USB. Will the USB ports also support RS-232 communications?
Our data logging software on the Palm currently works quite well with
serial communications, and we would prefer not to have to do a
rewrite.

So, does anybody have any recommendations as to a low-end
model of Palm that we can design for? We need a model that will be
available for about 3 years. And we need to know if we can continue
to use serial communications, or if we will have to rewrite our code
for USB.

I appreciate any input/recommendations on this. You may
email replies directly to me at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks,

Clint
