I was mistaken.  Upon reviewing the old messages on this topic (like
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/palm-dev-forum/message/47876), it appears
that direct memory access to the Epson chips is just slow, but not
dangerous.  Jeff also had some followup, where he got slower frame rates
composing to the screen versus composing to an off-screen bitmap then
blitting that.
