It's a bit difficult to know exactly what you're asking here. To do a
HotSync then yes, you need a conduit. This conduit can actually
communicate using serial comms or TCP/IP or whatever. That bit doesn't
matter to the conduit.
You can of course communicate without using a conduit. You could even
write your own syncing protocol if you wanted to.
If you just want to install or backup a database to/from the Palm then
you don't need to write a conduit.
