How do I use a .r file in CodeWarrior

I'd like to maintain just my menus in MyProgMenus.r and the rest of the resources in 
MyProg.rsrc. 
Is this possible? 

I've added the MyProgMenus.r to my project, and the TEXT .r Rez entry in file 
mappings.  When I go to compile I get 'error during creat of "(unprintable 
character)rez.out".  Is there a target preferences setting I must use?
