What do you think char # 31 is?
On Palm OS devices, with the Standard font, character #31 is a square block
(which is what the OS displays for "unprintable" characters.)
Get a copy of AsciiChart.prc (or a similar program) if you want to see what
each character looks like on a Palm OS device.
