Virtual Key Code Causes Unwanted Beep

I am using the keyDownEvent to place a custom-defined virtual key code into
the event queue. However, if the UI focus is within a text field, for
instance, the Palm beeps. Is there anyway to enqueue a custom virtual key
codes without having the Palm beep?
