Field question?

Hi All,
        I want to have a editable field in which I shhuold be able to type in
characters as well as numbers. I am currently not being able to do this. If
I set numeric property of field to true it does not allow chars  and if I
set it to false it does not allow numbers.
        If there is any other way of dong this? Any samples will be helpful.
