I apologize if my post went against a previous policy established by this
group.
It's my understanding that this site is to educate Palm developers and equip
them for the "Palm economy." It's unfortunate, but that means being
knowledgeable of potential losses in revenue as a result of warez groups. If
this wasn't a major concern, I'd imagine the original poster would not have
asked the question.
Based on the message thread, my impression was that this individual truly
wanted to learn if his software was being illegally distributed. Sure he
could fire up http://www.google.com and perform a search on his own, but so
can all the individuals that ask the typical question "URGENT: how do I get
my data into a PDB file?"
I agree that this list should not be a place to advertise for warez groups,
but it is a place for discussing and answering Palm-related development
questions. If we begin to censor "questionable" information, we are only
dumbing-down ourselves. I would like to think that if a security hole was
found on the Palm OS, it would be made known to us as developers so we could
protect against it and maybe even offer a patch for it. Who knows, perhaps
some gifted, determined individual from this group will take this
information and make it their life goal to produce a solution that
effectively blocks out warez groups from hacking Palm applications:-)
We all must make an individual decision whether to ignore the situation or
actively take measures to combat against such groups. Though our decisions
may vary, we should at lest give a heads up to other developers that are
asking legitimate questions concerning the illegal distribution of their
software products.
May I also suggest that if it's the list's policy to not allow any posting
of warez sites then please remove mine. I'd not be sorry that I posted the
link but would be that I didn't adhere to the list's rules.
Unless utterly necessary, this will be my last comment on this topic.
