The following statement below is not quite true - they are all 32K on the
inside, but some of the devices have 16 bit data buses (I assume the
Dragonballs are in this category, haven't checked).

Actually the Dragonball processors are all 32 bit - in fact all Motorola
68k
based processor are 32 bit.  (  Look at the register width ).
The problem is with 64 bit ( long long ) results or operands.  Thats when
you need the extra funcs to handle them.
