There's a difference between the storage heap and the dynamic heap. That
1Mb of memory is used not only by the running app, but also by the OS, and
also for all the user's stored data and applications. On a 1Mb device, the
dynamic heap is only (as far as I remember) 64Kb, which is shared by the
current application and the system.
On a 1Mb device, you can use about 14Kb--the rest is used by the system.
It gets somewhat better on larger-memory devices. On a Palm III with 2 Mb,
the heap is 96Kb and you can use about 36Kb.
