John,
I posted something to the prc-tools-devel list about
the problem(s), so I did not go into depth here.

But bascially I started with a fresh install (i.e. no
cygwin at all) and followed the release notes for a
windows install at:

http://sourceforge.net/project/shownotes.php?release_id=31764

Then I compiled and installed pilrc-2.8p5

the massaging that I needed (there were other things
that I thought I had to do, but ended up not needing)
was to make a "empty" libm.a

The linker was trying to link it in and since it
didn't exist, I got an error.
I fixed this by donig the follwing:
echo "!<arch>\n" > /usr/m68k-palmos/lib/libm.a

and everything works now with old makefiles

The other massaging was when I tried to compile the
version myself. Things like patches were for files in
the prc-tools-2.1 directory and the files unpacked to
prc-tools-2.0.02. Just little things that are well in
the acceptable range of problems you see when dealing
with pre releases (and easliy fixed by someone who has
done things like this before)

On a side note, can you change the "corrupt 4" error
message to "corrupt 5"?

Thanks.

P.S. so my makefile is correct and there is a problem
with the cygwin version of pilrc p5?
