I'm not an expert in this area, but I think the problem with supporting odd
boundary memory access is space on the chip. It takes more transistors, and
that means more space, and probably more power consumption too. CPUs
designed for embedded applications are always trying to put more and more
extra functionality into the CPU, so that fewer other chips are needed to
build the device. So, a less complex CPU means more other goodies go on the
chip, which means a smaller, more efficient device.
