Rather than the version of the OS, memory allocation will actually depend on
the amount of dynamic heap available on the device. It is possible that the
3.3 device that you have might just have 96K of dynamic heap size whereas
the 3.1 and/or the 3.5 device that you have might have 128 or 256K of
dynamic heap.

and check the dynamic heap size available on the device you're testing.
