I found an undocumented (and presumably unsupported) system trap called
HwrLCDSleep(Boolean, Boolean)
which seems to work on Visor and PalmVx models I have here. It appears to
switch off the screen but not progress to sleep mode. Eventually, it will go
to sleep if the auto off continues as normal. While the screen is off the
digitiser works (even though you can't see the 'results') with the obvious
consequences. As you say, it seems the most sinistar of these a fatal
exception occurs as the Palm will appear to be as dead as a Dodo. In the
screen off mode, any of the hard buttons will turn it on again as well as
performed their designated actions. In addition, there appears to be a
corresponding HwrXXX routine that turns the screen back on programmatically
although I've not tried that.
