It doesn't count as "multi-plexing", but you can open the serial port in the
background - whereby your app (or whatever) retains control until another
app (or whatever) attempts to open. You lose control for the time being,
then get it back afterwards - with caveats. Checkout SrmOpenBackground if
this is of interest. It's important to note that only one task can have
background control of the port.
