Nice to here from you again. So...what you are saying then is that the palm
can send AT commands and stuff to a cell phone using a cable or an IrDA
signal, and it will act just like a modem and allow the connection to occur?
I guess I didn't know that cell phones had modem capabilities built in... am
I on track with that line of thinking?

Depends on your model of Palm and phone obviously. However the options
currently are IrDA or a serial cable. Most new mobile phones (esp from
Nokia) have IrDA and they work great with a Palm. There are a bunch of
cables available for other phones...
Oh yeah, Bluetooth will be there soon as an option also. Ericsson have
already shipped a few BT enabled phones (R520, T39), plus a dongle for some
of the others... And Nokia have a BT kit too for some of theirs...

You don't need any special software to accomplish that. It is possible with
plain Palm OS, since OS 2.0. Just set up a PPP dial-up
connection to an internet service provider via your cell-phone and then use
the Network HotSync as you would on a LAN. Works very
well for me. Be aware though, that the PC will only be able to handle one
connection at a time with Palm's regular HotSync manager
software.
