I actually tried some Bluetooth phones yesterday... T39m and R520m from
Ericsson... they worked pretty well also - without the hassle of
line-of-sight... :-)

Personally, I am using a cell-phone from Siemens, which has a built-in modem
through IrDa. It understands all the regular AT
commands. Like Gavin Maxwell already pointed out, other manufacturers have
cell-phones with similar capabilities. Depending on your
environment, a serial cable might be preferable, because with IrDa the two
devices have to lie still, within direct sight, and very
close to each other. It is quite easy to disrupt such a delicate setup :-)
