The most obvious way to get where you want to go is to start at the beginning of the tutorial and run through it, taking the time you need to absorb what it has to teach. Buy yourself a good reference manual for C, such as "C - a reference manual, by Harbison and Steele". Use it to get answers to basic C questions. When you're done with the tutorial, you should have no problem finding the answers to your questions in the source code provided for the built in applications. Both the To Do List and Datebook apps have editable text inside a table.
