With a network app, though, you stand the possible chance of losing the
network connection (server sends an "are you there" message and your app
would send a reply but it's not running, then connection is dropped).  In
the case of ICQ and AIM, their network protocols allow for rather painless
recovery of a dropped network connection, but that's dependant on the
protocol.  You can't do that with IRC, for example, without a bit of
hassle to get back to where you were before.
