If its 802.11b, you should be able to use any compatible wireless access
point.  Mind you, I don't have the Xircom module but I have at least 5
brands of 802.11b cards working with other-branded cheaper access points.
Just make sure the software that comes with the access point will run on
what ever platform you will set it up with.  i.e. don't buy an Apple airport
if you only have PCs, or get a D-Link access point if you only have Macs.
You could even use another wireless card.  (the link will be a touch slower
and some cards don't support AP mode)

BTW, $300 is not too much for a decent access point.
