PL/1 has been used for all types of programming, from OS (GE/Honeywell multics), to compilers, to commercial business applications. Just another language that conforms to Dykstra's and Chomski's grammars. People will use what they like, and usually don't change after they get an understanding of one or two languages.
Personally, I loved PL/1 25 to 30 years ago. I haven't used it since. It is mainly a IBM big system language. A few other implementations did occur. Lennie is on a personal, not business endeavor. So the commercial merits are not important to him. I also would love to have a good and generally accepted high level language development system that was platform independent. Obviously, appforge and others also do this. Programming in C is not the best way to loose your sanity. It is necessary sometimes due to memory and timing constraints, but many palm apps could easily and efficiently be produced in a high level language. You should look at some of Lennie's other threads in this forum and in the tools forum. Also, he has a new web site with copies of everything there. That may clear up some of your wondering why this is important (or not). -------------------------------------------------------------------- Gary Gorsline Easy Business Software ========================== End of Message ========================== ----- Original Message ----- From: "Hal Mueller" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Palm Developer Forum" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Thursday, January 17, 2002 11:51 AM Subject: RE: PL/I for Palm > As one who has never used PL/I, let me ask this: > > What are the sorts of PalmOS/handheld problems and applications for > which PL/I is a better solution than the other available languages or > environments? > > Hal > > -- > For information on using the Palm Developer Forums, or to unsubscribe, please see http://www.palmos.com/dev/tech/support/forums/ > -- For information on using the Palm Developer Forums, or to unsubscribe, please see http://www.palmos.com/dev/tech/support/forums/
