Last time I heard about it, "hackme" allows the user id to be different dependent on which app looks for it. This feature is really questionable. That's probably why developers don't like it.
Simply change the user ID back and forth should not defeat a "OK" reg scheme. For example, my code checks the ID on every run and compares a hash with the stored data. I think it is possible to defeat "hackme". I'd have a small prc inserted as resource and extracted to create a prc. Upon receiving the syncnotify launch code, the tiny app checks the hotsync user id and compare it with the one stored in database by the parent app... If the app uses a random creator id, there is no way that hackme type stuff will work. But as you said in your famouse paper, fighting hackers is waste of time. Since the cracked version of any software can be obtained easily. Who would use things like "hackme"?
