As a serial manager newbie, I just looked up this Old and New serial manager
business and found potentially confusing information:

Companion Vol.2 p.94 -
"The old Serial Manager API is available on all versions of
Palm OS; however, it only supports RS-232 communications
   and low-level IrDA communications."

Reference p.1383 -
"NOTE: The API described in this chapter is obsolete if the New
Serial Manager Feature Set is present. The API is still supported
for backward compatibility; however, the Serial Manager APIs are
   preferred."

It could be made more clear that "obsolete" really means "subject to removal
without much notice" as opposed to just "isn't as cool as the new API that
does the same stuff and more."
