Unlike code running on previous 68k-only Palm OS versions, in Palm OS 5 if the memory 
address you try to access doesn't allow the particular type of access (and/or doesn't 
exist at all) an abort is generated and your application is toast. You would have to 
reprogram the MMU to "trick" it into allowing access.
