Well, we managed to get our own PPP replacement protocol working on both sides - Palm and Windows - and it seems to be fine.

You'd need a PPP implementation on the PC side that uses Palm's USB driver, but unfortunately the driver is very poorly documented and I don't know if anyone has reported any success with it.
