That should be. In my experience, the only reason that doesn't happen is if you haven't properly registered to receive SMS events. Registered applications usually get notification _before_ the built-in SMS application AFAIKT. If you're getting the standard SMS application dialog when a message arrives, I'd wager that you haven't properly registered.
