I have the same problem. But maybe this can help a little: I created a connection profile named Custom with exactly the same properties as Direct Serial and set the connection in the network panel as Custom also.
If I need to switch between a modem and a serial connection I first remove the profile I created and then create a new one named Custom but with the correct properties for a modem connection (i.e. Palm Modem US/Canada) and it works for me The bad thing is that I have to set the Phone number previously in the Network panel, I haven't found out how to change it in my app. Does anyone knows how to do it? I tried setting up the properties of the network interface but it doesn't change when I go back to the Network panel in Prefs.
