If you must display * for password characters, you can minimize errors by not using graffiti. Draw your own keypad or array of buttons and display * for each number/character tapped. Since you won't be using graffiti (and would not be able to use the popup keyboard since it isn't maskable) you can control the password length, keep independent track of the entries and display whatever you need as a mask character.
