I would guess that people who want their applications to work on all 
devices, current and future would care, since an unsupported feature can be 
eliminated or changed.

However, this isn't a problem anymore.  As David Fedor pointed out on 
palm-dev last week, the new Palm OS SDK 5 Reference manual actually 
explains the format of font resources, both the single-density ('NFNT') and 
multiple-density ('nfnt') forms.

So, now Palm OS officially supports user-defined fonts.  The original 
question is moot.
