The price of CodeWarrior for Palm OS V9 is $399, which is $150 more than the current V7-to-V8 upgrade. Our presale promotion lets you save $50, making the price $349, which is still $100 more than the old V7-to-V8 upgrade price. The V9 upgrade price is $199 (half of its MSRP), but if bought before the release, Metrowerks will pay for the shipping. This isn't clearly presented on our store site right now -- I'll pass this concern on to our web team to get it cleared up.Ok, What gives? V9 costs 1/2 of V8! A full copy of V9 costs less than upgrading 7 to 8??? Is this a marketing thing or is V9 not a full product? Will I still need V8 to produce pre-OS5 compatible apps?
V9 includes 95% of the functionality included with V8, plus a lot of new features. The Handspring Springboard ROM linker was dropped from the product, and are we no longer distributing the HandEra 330 SDK. The product is also hosted only on Win32 systems, not Mac OS, but everything else from V8 is included. The V9 tools are capable of targeting everything from Palm OS 1.0 devices to the current Palm Tungsten T and Sony NX70V devices.
We looked at the pricing of V8 and feedback from our customers, and we got a strong message that the price of the V8 tools was too high for a large part of the market. To respond, we rolled the price of V9 back from $499 to $399, and since our upgrades are traditionally half of the full price, that was reduced accordingly. Our hope is that more developers will see the advantages of updating, and the increased number of renewals will offset the price reduction, making both Metrowerks and the development community happy.
