Printing

I have a program that prints to an IR printer. We're using an old ptPrint library from Symbol. It works ok if everything is set up normally, but it doesn't return the correct error codes if there is no printer or the printer is not ready. Since I can't catch the errors, sometimes it causes the app to crash.
Does anyone else have this problem?
Does anyone know of an upgrade to this software?
What software do people use for printing?
