If you add a launch code to trigger the mail check and tell what what it
is and tell me the creator of your app, I can send you a version of
NotifyMail for Palm that I'm working on which already does this. I
currently have it working with Mark/Space Mail and would be more than
happy to add your app as a choice. For my app, you enter the "trigger
text" on the Treo and then you setup your procmail or whatever to send
down the SMS with the trigger text; my app receives the SMS and
determines if it is for a mail check or a regular SMS.

My email address is below if you're interested in a solution that works
today without you having to do additional work.
