I am using my own brightness slider, which accepts values between 0 and
255 and sets them (this is how the UIBrightnessAdjust slider probably
works as well). What I noticed, too, is that in my app the slider values
0 up to 77 all turn the brightness to off on the Tungsten T.
Apparently having still too much spare time, I went through the "real"
brightness slider of the Tungsten T and increased it one by one. What I
noticed was that when putting it to the far left and increasing
brightness by 13 (tapping the up-button 13 times) had no effect. On the
14th increase brightness went on (very very low and heavily flickering).
On the 15th pressing of the up-button it went stronger and more stable.

press of the up-button I was at the right end.
Interesting: 192-14+77 = 255
Or graphical:
|--------|---|-------------------------|
1 2 3
1: Values 0 to 63 turn the backlight off (not settable by the Tungsten
T's brightness slider)
2: Values 64 to 77 turn the backlight off, too (but can be set by the
Tungsten T's brightness slider)
3: Values 78 to 255 set the brightness level and the backlight is on
(I also verified these values by setting the Tungsten T's slider to the
far left and reading the brightness out - it was set to 64. The far
right is 255). And in a dark room you only see the display when it's at
78 or up.
Apparently the Tungsten T only allows a maximum of 177 different levels
of brightness. (probably a hardware limitation rather than a software
one)
