Ditto. If i want to change the appearance of something either usually hide it, change it, show it and for update. Or if the change is a 'big' one, then I find it easier to create a new thing and replace the old one. It's usually a lot easier to do and you don't get into a wrestling match with the API.
I don't know if this would work for you, but when I have to change anything about a label, I usually just delete the existing label and recreate a new one with all the same properties except for what I wanted to change.
One case in particular is when changing label text and the new text is shorter. I used to get screen garbage but calling FrmHideObject and FrmShowObject did the trick.
