You mean like skinmanager (http://www.skinmgr.com/) does?
If so... it's probably just setting a TRAP, since apparently it only works on PEG-NR70, not the newer 5.0 devices. Shouldn't be too tough to search their PRC using PRC Explorer and see what calls to SysSetTrapAddress() it is making.
