Since it's an owner-draw list control, how about a 2-pronged solution:

a)  Catch lstSelectEvent and deselect it.
b)  On OS 3.5 and higher use WinSetTextColor and WinSetBackColor to select
the normal (i.e. non-selected) colors, and then draw the text.
