The bad news:

The Palm III (depends on which palm III you got...there were several)
came with version 3.0 of the ROM's, which didn't natively support
networking through the I/R port (this includes hotsyncing)).

The good news:

You can upgrade the flash roms on these devices all the way up to 4.1
with Palm's OS upgrade.  (Not a bad idea, actually).

I don't use a Mac for development, can't help you there.
