We use the Yahoo Groups service for our mail list. From time to time we get complaints because of the ads and poor search functions. On the other hand, people like getting the messages in email and being able to respond to them the same way.
George, Lyris does list hosting, as well as make list management software. We use them at MW, and I think PalmSource uses their software for their email lists (like this one).
