This isn't an accurate or a complete statement of the problem. Sending only one character at a time from an external terminal to the m550 serial port seems to work just fine. So SrmReceiveCheck() *will* return after only 1 byte is in the buffer, but after a slight delay (a few milliseconds it seems). It may be that the OMAP chip itself takes some time to shift incoming serial port data down its built-in 8-byte FIFO.
